e-Way bill

Short answer

What is e-Way bill? An electronic document India requires to move goods worth more than ₹50,000. It is generated from the invoice and dispatch details.

In plain words

An e-Way bill is an electronic document that must travel with a consignment of goods. It lists what is moving, between which GSTINs, and in which vehicle. Part A carries the goods and party details and Part B carries the vehicle number.

It is generally required when the consignment is worth more than ₹50,000, with exceptions for certain goods and some state rules. The supplier, the buyer or the transporter can generate it. Its validity depends on distance, roughly one day for every 100 km.

Example

A Mumbai wholesaler sends goods worth ₹3,40,000 to Surat, about 280 km away. The e-Way bill is needed, and at one day per 100 km or part of it, it is valid for about three days.

If the truck breaks down and the goods move to another vehicle, the vehicle number in Part B must be updated. If the journey runs past the validity, an extension is needed.

Why it matters

  • Detention: goods moving without a valid bill can be held at a check post, with penalty and demurrage.
  • Mismatch: an e-Way bill that disagrees with the invoice causes delays at the gate.
  • Expiry: a bill that lapses mid-journey is a problem only the transporter notices, usually too late.

How Kinnow handles it

When a delivery is dispatched in Sell and Stock & Ship, and the consignment is above the limit in the India setup, Comply generates the e-Way bill from the invoice and dispatch details. It is generated only once for a dispatch, even if the event is repeated. Job-work dispatches get one too.

A watcher lists active bills that are about to lapse, or have already lapsed, and suggests the extra days. The extension is recorded in Kinnow; a person still has to extend on the portal.

Limit: the validity and extension rules are set by the tax authority and change from time to time. Check them with your CA, and test the connection with us before you rely on it.

Tell us how many trucks leave your gate on a busy day and we will show the expiry list.
