GRNI (Goods Received Not Invoiced)
What is GRNI? Goods received, not invoiced: the amount you owe for goods that have arrived from suppliers but whose invoice has not come yet, recorded in your books as money owed.
In plain words
GRNI stands for goods received, not invoiced. Your store has received the goods and signed the goods receipt, but the supplier's bill has not arrived. You already owe the money, so your books should show it as a liability at month-end.
If you leave it out, expenses and stock look lower than they are, and the next month carries a bill that belongs to this one.
On 28 March you receive 100 units at ₹500 each. The supplier's bill arrives on 6 April.
| At 31 March | Amount |
|---|---|
| Stock (or expense) recorded | ₹50,000 |
| Owed for goods received, not invoiced | ₹50,000 |
| GST booked | Nil, since no tax invoice has arrived |
When the bill is recorded in April, the accrual is reversed and the real payable replaces it. Input tax credit starts when the bill is recorded.
Why it matters
- Accurate month-end: profit and stock are right only if the goods you hold are matched by what you owe.
- Audit: a large GRNI balance, or one that ages for months, invites questions about unmatched receipts.
- Supplier relations: a receipt with no bill often means a bill that is lost, disputed or never sent.

How Kinnow handles it
In Buy, make & ship, the store records the goods receipt, and Kinnow keeps a list of receipts that have no supplier bill against them. The Buy overview also shows the count. The 3-way match agent matches order, receipt and bill line by line when the bill arrives, and holds it until differences are sorted out.
At month-end, Finance & tax is where your accountant posts the accrual, as with any journal. Use the unbilled-receipts list as the basis. See period close for the checklist.
Limit: Kinnow lists the unbilled receipts, but the month-end accrual entry itself is posted by your accountant. It is not created automatically.

Questions
What is GRNI?
Goods received, not invoiced: the amount you owe for goods that have arrived from suppliers but whose invoice has not come yet, recorded in your books as money owed.
Is GRNI an asset or a liability?
It is a liability. It is the amount you owe for goods you already hold. The matching debit is stock or an expense, so your balance sheet and profit stay correct until the bill arrives.
How long can a receipt stay unbilled?
There is no single rule. Most businesses chase anything unbilled beyond the supplier's normal billing cycle. A long-standing balance should be investigated and, if it is an error, corrected with your CA's advice.
