Filing Prep agent

Builds the GSTR-1 file from your books and lists every document it left out, with the reason, for a person to clear before filing.

Validated with each client
Short answer

What does Filing Prep replace? The work of a compliance / tax executive: preparing the GSTR-1 file and TDS drafts from the books. Builds the GSTR-1 file from your books and lists every document it left out, with the reason, for a person to clear before filing.

Shows why

It shows its reasons and how sure it is on every draft. When it is not sure, it only brings the item to your attention.

Waits for you

Nothing is filed, paid or posted until a person approves it.

Gets reviewed

Every approval and correction is recorded, so you can see how it performs on your own books.

A day with Filing Prep

Take a finance executive at a trading company with about 600 sales invoices a month, preparing GSTR-1 under the eye of the finance head. Your CA may do the same steps for you.

  1. The month's sales are posted. Sales invoices and credit notes for the month are issued in Sell, and the accounts are up to date.
  2. She picks the month and presses Build return. In Comply, on the GSTR-1 screen, Kinnow reads that month's sales invoices and credit notes and sorts them into the return's sections: B2B, B2C small, B2C large, credit and debit notes, exports and the HSN summary.
  3. She reads three numbers. The screen shows documents in the month, documents on the return and documents left out. Every document that was left out is named with the reason, such as a missing GSTIN.
  4. She fixes the cause and builds again. The fix is made in the invoice or the customer record, not in the return. If the month has more documents than could be read in one pass, the screen says the return covers only part of it and tells her not to file it.
  5. Purchases are reconciled against GSTR-2B. This is a separate step on the GSTR-2B screen. Kinnow will not let a GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B be marked filed until a complete reconciliation run exists for that period.
  6. The finance head reviews and a person files. She downloads the JSON or Excel file and uploads it on the GST portal herself. Then she records in Kinnow that the return is filed. Kinnow does not file.

What it reads and what it hands back

Kinnow prepares and exports. A person uploads and files.

What a person decides

  • What to do about the left-out list. A person decides whether each document is corrected, excluded for good reason, or moved to another month.
  • Whether the return goes ahead. The finance head approves the numbers. A short return uploads without complaint, so the list of left-out documents is the one place the shortfall shows.
  • The upload and the filing. A person uploads the file on the GST portal and files. Kinnow then records that it was filed.
  • What it never does. It does not send anything to the GST portal for you. Nothing is filed, paid or posted without a person.

Ask Kinnow about your returns

Ask Kinnow answers from the books you may see and shows its source before it runs. Questions a finance head might type:

  • "Which invoices were left out of September's GSTR-1, and why?" Lists each document with the reason.
  • "How does the GSTR-2B credit compare with what we booked?" Shows matched, short and excess amounts by supplier.
  • "Which customers have no GSTIN on file?" Lists them, since their invoices may be left out.
  • "Which TDS deductions are missing a PAN?" Lists the rows that block a challan draft.

Ask us to build a return on your last closed month and compare it with the one your adviser filed.

Questions

What does the Filing Prep agent do?

Builds the GSTR-1 file from your books and lists every document it left out, with the reason, for a person to clear before filing.

Does Filing Prep file the return?

No. It builds the GSTR-1 file and lists the documents it left out. A person clears them, uploads the file and files.

Does Filing Prep get better with use?

What gets better is the match between your books and the return: each month the left-out list shows what to fix at source. Your approvals and corrections are kept as feedback, and we check results with you.

How is it paid for?

It is part of your agent pack. There are no per-user seats.

Which returns can Kinnow prepare?

For India, the GSTR-1 file is built from your books. Working files for GSTR-3B, GSTR-1A, GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C are prepared from the figures you give, and TDS challan and quarterly return drafts from withholding rows. Returns for other countries are described on the compliance pages.

What does "left out" mean on the GSTR-1 screen?

A document in the month that could not be placed on the return, for example because the customer has no usable GSTIN. Each one is listed with its reason, so you can fix it and build again.
