The Day (Zest)

Short answer

What is The Day? A list of everything in motion, in three groups: Ahead, Landed and Still out. Items nobody has answered are ranked by how long they have been quiet.

In plain words

Your inbox and task list show what needs you. The Day shows what is happening, whether or not it needs you: a signature out with a customer, a mail awaiting a reply, a meeting this afternoon. Most of it is waiting on someone outside the company, so the screen tells you how long each thing has been quiet.

Example

At 9:30 on a Monday a distributor sees three groups. Ahead: quarterly review with Sharma Distributors at 3 pm. Landed: a lease signed 14 minutes ago, and a visit note filed an hour ago. Still out: quote Q-1042 to Acme Foods, 9 days silent, and a mail to the auditor, 4 days silent. A quote sent six days ago and opened twice ranks below one sent three days ago and never opened, because the second is the quieter. The entries are made up.

Why it matters

  • Time. No more "did they get back to us?" calls; the answer is on one screen.
  • Follow-up. A quote, signature or mail that goes quiet is visible before it lapses.
  • Calm. A day with nothing in it says so, instead of showing an empty grid.

How Kinnow handles it

The Day is a screen in Conversations (Zest). Each row names the other party, what it is and its state, how long since or until a person acted on it, and who holds it. If nobody holds it yet, it says "nobody yet". There is no compose box: you act on the record itself, and The Day tells you where to go. If a band is empty, the screen says whether the day is calm or only that band is quiet at this hour.

The limits: The Day does not see phone calls today. The Ahead band is thin until you use meetings and dated forms, because those feed it. Read more in See what's coming, arrived, and gone quiet and Zest.

Ask us to open The Day on a sample company and walk through one quiet quote.

Questions

How is The Day different from Home?

Home is a queue of things with your name on them. The Day is a register of everything in flight, most of which needs nobody until someone replies.

Why sort by silence and not by age?

A signature sent six days ago and opened twice is healthier than one sent three days ago and never opened. Sorting by age would bury the second one.

What if a group shows nothing?

The screen tells you which kind of nothing it is: a calm day, or a band that is quiet at this hour while other groups have rows.
